I captured this image of this stone spring house during the summer of 2023. I had passed this structure many many times while riding my bicycle around Lake Waramaug and eventually returned to photograph it on a warm summer evening.
The purpose of a spring house was to keep spring water clean by excluding fallen leaves, animals, etc. The enclosed structure was also used for refrigeration before the advent of ice delivery by utilizing the cool spring water flowing through.
It makes for an idyllic scene with the grass in the foreground sprinkled with small wildflowers, a stone wall and a gentle sloping hill in the background while the spring house basks in warm evening light.
